World Heritage Horton Plains National Park was known as the “Maha Eliya Thenna” (Great Open Plains) prior to the arrival of Colonials. Stone Age inhabitants of this country has left their marks on this prehistoric ground that once they dwelt, as hunter gatherers and even prospered into the Agriculture. Today, Horton Plains is an environmental system with unique climatic features such as ‘Cloud Forests’ whilst boasts its rich bio-diversity, thus sanctioned as a ‘World Heritage’ by the UNESCO in 2010.
